Kelly and Ebony's Birth

This was my first baby. I was 39 weeks and 2 days. On New Year's Eve night at 11pm after I went to the bathroom I noticed a slow stream of clear liquid coming out. Was this my water breaking? I thought it would be more like a gush of liquid. I put a pad on and went to bed. New Years morning at 7am I went to the bathroom again and I felt like a water balloon inside of me popped. This was definitely my water breaking. I called the nurses station at the hospital and explained to them what happened. I felt no discomfort so I wasn't sure if I needed to come in. They said they wanted to hook me up to some monitors and see how baby was doing.

We got to the hospital at 8am. My midwife checked my cervix and said I was already at 5&1/2 cm dilated. I was shocked. I felt calm and completely comfortable. My husband and I spent the next few hours walking the hospital halls. I began to feel what felt like period cramps in my lower abdomen. I practiced my relaxed breathing when a stronger surge came. At 1pm my midwife checked my cervix again and said I was at 8cm. Around 1:30pm my surges got stronger and I had to really focus on my breathing.

The nurses began filling the tub since I had planned on having a water birth. Unfortunately the tub didn't fill fast enough. I felt a lot of pressure in my pelvis and I knew the time was near. I ended up having my baby at 2:58pm in a birthing stool and my midwife caught her. We had the New Years baby!

Everyone at the hospital was so nice and helpful. They were really impressed at how calm I was and how I did it all naturally. I had planned in listening to my rainbow relaxation track but since I was walking for much of my labor and was pain free I really didn't need it. Hypnobirthing really helped me stay relaxed. Ebony was born at 6 pounds and 14 ounces.
